BEACH SAFETY
SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS

If you are heading out to the beach, choose a lifeguarded one and remember the red and yellow flags show the safest area to swim.

Kia Köwhiria tētahi takutai e tēteia ana ka kauhoe ki waenga i ngā haki.

ROCK FISHING

When fishing from rocks, never turn your back to the sea and always wear a lifejacket.

I a koe e hī ika ana i runga toka kaua rawa e huri tuarā ki te moana me mau pare mānu hoki i ngā wā katoa.

IF IN DOUBT, STAY OUT

If you feel uncomfortable about getting into the water, go with your gut feeling and stay out. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Mēnā e rangirua ana e noho ki uta!

IF YOU SEE SOMEONE IN TROUBLE

If there are lifeguards on patrol, let them know. If you can’t see any lifeguards, CALL 111 & ASK FOR THE POLICE. They have a direct line to our emergency call-out squads across New Zealand and Coastguard NZ as well.

Mei kitea tētahi e raru nui ana waeahia 111 ka uia ngā  pirihimana.

READ AND UNDERSTAND SAFETY SIGNS

Even though conditions can change quickly, our lifeguards keep a constant eye on the beach situation as they continuously scope the beach for hazards, keep on top of weather forecasts and understand the swell and tide conditions – they’re a friendly bunch too!

Kia āta panuihia ngā tohu haumaru - kia uiuia ngā āhuatanga huarere ki ngā tūtei nā te auau ka tahuri ai ngā āhuatanga huarere.

DON'T OVERESTIMATE YOUR ABILITY OR YOUR CHILDREN'S ABILITY TO COPE IN THE CONDITIONS

Keep your kids within arm's reach at all times in or near the water – rogue or large waves move really quickly and unexpectedly and can sweep kids away or knock them off their feet.

Kia kauaka e whakahīhī nui ki ö āheinga kauhoe, ki ngā aheinga hoki o āu tamariki.

BE SUN SMART. "SLIP, SLOP, SLAP & WRAP!"

With New Zealand having one of the highest rates of melanoma in the world, staying safe in the sun is key. SLIP into a shirt and clothing that offers good protection from the sun. SLOP on plenty of broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors. SLAP on a hat with a wide brim or a cap with flaps. WRAP on a pair of sunglasses. Choose close-fitting, wrap-around glasses that cover your eye area and protect the sensitive skin around them.

Kia mātauhia a Tama - Kuhuna, Pania, Whakamau, Tākaia. Kia āraia tö kiri, ö karu I ö ngā hīhī kino a Tama.

CLOSE ENOUGH TO CUDDLE

Keep your kids within arm's reach at all times in or near the water – rogue or large waves move really quickly and unexpectedly and can sweep kids away or knock them off their feet.

Kia mataara nui ki ngā tamariki kei roto, ā, e tata atu ana ki te wai - kia taea ai te whātoro tata nei i ngā wā katoa.
